Having Children

Hunter Baker at Mere Comments has a great post on having children. Here’s a snippet:

For those of you who CHOOSE to be childless, think twice about it. It’s true you won’t enjoy restaurants as much and your time won’t be your own. But the emotional return on watching this little person, who really is part of you, grow up is impossible to duplicate with ski weekends or trips to Mexico.

Brendan Adolph Roberts was born Friday, April 03 at 10:30 pm. Mother and child both doing very well.

This is our third. Our oldest, Naomi, is quite excited to have a new little baby brother. The youngest, Hannah, seems to not really realize what has happened. She’ll learn!

A word on the name. Brendan comes from Saint Brendan the Navigator, an old Irish monk who reportedly sailed to America. Adolph comes from an old gentleman in north Mississippi Sandra and I are good friends with. Below is a picture of Adolph with Hannah.

Public Devotion

On the drive to the church this morning (while listening to an online sermon) I was thinking about public vs private devotion and study in the family. By nature I am a very private person and my personal devotional activities are always done as privately as I can get them. This fits well with my strong introvert nature. But what example does this set for my family?

We do family devotions. Every morning after we wake up and every night before bed we round everyone up and read the Bible and pray together. That’s what we do as a family. But what example is set for how we should behave as individuals?

I am now feeling challenged to be with my kids where they can see me doing more Bible reading and prayer and even study and preparation for Sunday morning. It might cause my concentration to break more than a few times but it means my kids seeing one more example of what we do to grow in the Lord. This sort of practice might go against my nature, but God has changed my nature once, he can do it again.

My daughter is in the room with me, browsing my bookcases. She grabbed a random book and asked if I would read it to her. I took a look at my copy of Robert’s Rules of Order Newly Revised In Brief and said, “Well, if you want I will read it, but it is a really boring book! I even get bored with this book!” She replied, “I won’t get bored and I really want to read it!” So I started reading. A paragraph and a half later she grabs the book and says, “I know it doesn’t have pictures and I know I am bored but I just really want to read it myself.” After a few seconds of scanning the pages she threw the book aside and said, “That is a bored book!”
